AEWV job offer checks from Singapore: is your evidence ready before you resign?
Visa guide · 2026-10-14 · 9 min read

AEWV job offer checks from Singapore should establish both that the New Zealand role meets the visa requirements and that your documents support the work you claim. Start with the accredited employer, its approved job check and the written employment terms, then examine your experience, qualifications, English evidence and any occupational registration. A promising interview or familiar Singapore credential does not settle all these questions before you resign.
Make the written role the centre of your decision
Put the offer, job description and employment agreement together. Mark anything you cannot reconcile: different duties, an unclear work location, missing hours or pay described differently across documents. Ask for clarification in writing so your decision rests on the same role the employer intends to fill.
The AEWV requires an offer from an accredited employer with an approved job check for the position, at least 30 hours of work a week and at least the market rate. Its employment agreement cannot contain unlawful deductions, a trial period or unacceptable bonding clauses. Use the official AEWV requirements when reviewing the agreement.
Our New Zealand AEWV guide provides the wider application context. Here, the question is narrower: which parts of this offer and your supporting file still need an answer?
Connect the employer identity to the particular position
Search the INZ accredited employer list using the company or trading name, or its New Zealand Business Number. Compare the result with the organisation named in the agreement; do not rely on a logo or an accreditation screenshot sent in a message.
Some accredited employers opt out of public search results. If the business is missing, contact it directly for confirmation instead of concluding immediately that it is ineligible. Separately, ask about the approved job check for your role: a business appearing in the list does not answer that position-specific question.
Keep these enquiries distinct from your career assessment. Our article on presenting Singapore project experience for New Zealand tech roles helps you examine the work itself. Demand in an industry does not replace evidence for an individual offer.
Build an evidence file that another person can verify
INZ says a CV alone is insufficient proof of experience. Employment certificates and reference letters need supporting independently verifiable employment, pay or tax material, as applicable. A positive testimonial should let the reader establish what you did and when you did it.
For each relevant Singapore job, record the employer, dates, duties and available supporting records. Ask a referee to describe work they actually supervised rather than copying the New Zealand vacancy into a letter. Identify missing records early, especially if a former supervisor has moved on or payroll access ends when you leave.
| Evidence in your file | What to establish before relying on it |
|---|---|
| Employment testimonial or referee letter | Does it identify actual duties and employment dates, with support that can be checked independently? |
| Payslips or employment and tax records | Can they support the period claimed, and do names and dates agree across documents? |
| ITE or polytechnic qualification | Is the exact award and issuing institution recorded, with transcripts showing what you studied? |
| WSQ Statement of Attainment | Have you described the individual module instead of presenting it as a full qualification? |
| Occupational registration evidence | Does it address the New Zealand regulator’s requirements for the actual work? |
Use the CV as an index to this evidence. You can organise a work-history summary with Build AI CV, then check every claim against your records before sending it.
Describe Singapore awards without inventing an equivalent
The standard AEWV skills requirement is at least 2 years of relevant experience or a qualification at NZQCF level 4 or higher in the same field as the job, subject to applicable rules and exemptions. Check the requirements for the actual application; an employer may also need evidence of particular skills. Do not turn the alternative experience and qualification routes into a claim that every applicant needs both.
ITE distinguishes Nitec, Higher Nitec, Technical Diploma and Work-Study Diploma. Keep the award’s exact name and issuer, and retain transcripts or training evidence. For a polytechnic diploma, describe the course you completed rather than assigning it a New Zealand level yourself.
A WSQ Statement of Attainment certifies a single module. Preserve the issuing body printed on the document, including on older awards, instead of silently updating its name. A module may explain a skill you learned without establishing a complete occupational qualification.
An NZQA International Qualification Assessment compares an overseas qualification against the NZQCF; it does not simply adopt another country’s recognition evaluation. Confirm whether the receiving body requires an IQA. Our discussion of using Singapore trade experience in a New Zealand career move can help you describe practical work alongside study.
Resolve English and registration as separate requirements
For a first AEWV application, do not rely on older advice saying English evidence concerns only skill levels 4 and 5. The English requirement extended to skill level 3 from 1 June 2026. Check the occupation’s classification and the current AEWV evidence and exemption rules before deciding whether to book a test.
Working or studying in English in Singapore does not, by itself, establish an exemption. INZ’s general English-speaking-background route does not apply to the AEWV, so its Singapore GCE A-level table cannot be used as a blanket waiver. Citizenship, residence and education history are different facts in that enquiry.
Occupational registration is another decision. Overseas-trained electricians apply to the EWRB in the appropriate class; successful assessment leads to an invitation for a Limited Certificate, with supervised New Zealand work and any further requirements specified in the assessment letter. A Singapore licence or employment offer does not replace that process.
For restricted plumbing work, a current New Zealand licence is required. Read our article on matching Singapore plumbing experience to a New Zealand role when identifying duties to document. Keep qualification recognition, permission to practise and the visa application as separate tasks.
Recognise the route before arranging departure
The Singapore Work Exchange Programme Visa is separate from the AEWV. It requires Singapore citizenship and a valid Singapore passport, age 18–30, and a university qualification or at least 2 years of full-time university study. Singapore permanent residence alone does not meet those citizenship conditions.
That programme permits temporary work and does not allow a permanent job; it does not require a job offer. Do not use it as another name for employer sponsorship or assume that an ITE or polytechnic award meets its university-study condition.
If you are still comparing roles, use our New Zealand jobs and destination page to organise your search. Keep a separate note of unresolved visa and registration questions for each offer.
Work through unresolved questions before giving notice
- Reconcile the offer. Compare duties, hours and pay across documents and ask the employer to resolve differences.
- Confirm the employer and job check. Record the accreditation enquiry and clarify the particular position’s job check.
- Map your evidence. Match each relevant employment period and qualification to records you can provide; request missing documents while you still have access.
- Identify separate approvals. Establish whether qualification assessment, occupational registration or English evidence is needed, and who decides each point.
- Review payment instructions. The employer supplies the AEWV application link. Distinguish official application expenses from prohibited charges for a job.
- Review departure readiness. Keep outstanding document requests and application decisions visible before committing to resignation or travel.
New Zealand employers cannot charge for a job or make you pay their recruitment costs, including through another party. INZ will decline an AEWV if it considers money was offered or promised to the employer or its agent for the offer. Calling a payment an administrative arrangement does not remove that concern.
INZ does not ask for visa fees by bank transfer: its guidance identifies debit or credit card payment through its forms, or payment at an approved Visa Application Centre. Check the current fee and instructions when applying. Keep receipts and correspondence identifying who requested each payment and why.
Common mistakes when preparing an offer file in Singapore
- Using residence as an eligibility shortcut. A Singapore address does not establish citizenship, overseas work rights or an English exemption.
- Renaming qualifications. Keep the original award and issuer; explain its content without claiming an unassessed NZQCF equivalence.
- Submitting disconnected records. Resolve inconsistent employment dates and differences between your CV, testimonials and supporting documents.
- Equating accreditation with approval. Employer status, the job check and your visa application answer different questions.
- Accepting pressure to buy the offer. Separate legitimate application costs from demands for payment in exchange for employment.
Frequently asked questions
Can my Singapore CV prove the experience needed for an AEWV?
A CV summarises your work but is not sufficient experience evidence on its own. Prepare employment certificates or referee letters with supporting independently verifiable pay, tax or employment records, as applicable. Keep dates and duties consistent across the documents.
Does an ITE or polytechnic award automatically meet the qualification requirement?
No automatic equivalence should be assumed from the award title or a familiar level number. Preserve the exact qualification and issuer, gather transcripts, and establish whether an NZQA International Qualification Assessment is required. A WSQ Statement of Attainment certifies a single module, so describe its scope accurately.
Does studying in English in Singapore remove the AEWV English requirement?
It does not establish a blanket exemption. Use the AEWV-specific evidence and exemption rules for the actual occupation and application. INZ’s general English-speaking-background guidance, including its Singapore GCE A-level table, does not apply to the AEWV.
What if the employer does not appear in the accreditation search?
Some accredited employers choose not to appear in public results. Ask the employer directly for confirmation and clarify the approved job check for your particular role. An unanswered search is a reason to investigate, while a matching employer entry still does not establish your own visa eligibility.
Can a placement payment be included in the overseas offer?
New Zealand employers cannot charge for a job or pass their recruitment costs to you through another party. INZ will decline an AEWV application if it considers that you or your agent offered or promised money to the employer or its agent in exchange for the offer. Keep legitimate application expenses separate from any demand to buy a job.
