Australia Skills in Demand visa (482): applying from Singapore
Understand employer sponsorship, Singapore-issued qualifications, employment evidence, English and police documents before preparing a subclass 482 application.

What the Skills in Demand visa does
The Skills in Demand visa (subclass 482) is a temporary employer-sponsored work visa. It is tied to an eligible nominated position and the applicable visa conditions; it is not a general permit to travel to Australia and look for any job.
Employer approval, nomination and your visa application are separate stages. An offer does not by itself authorise you to start work.
Check the stream and nominated occupation
The Core Skills stream, Specialist Skills stream and Labour Agreement arrangements have different requirements. Check the actual role, duties, occupation classification and salary rather than selecting a stream from the job title alone.
Read the official occupation information and the current stream requirements before assessing a role on the Australian jobs board.
Employer, experience and occupation requirements
You need an eligible employer and nominated role, relevant skills and experience, and the applicable English, health and character evidence. Some applicants need a formal skills assessment. Regulated work can also require a state or territory licence or professional registration.
Keep the employment, skills assessment, registration and visa stages separate. A Singapore qualification, employer interview or successful assessment does not automatically complete the other stages.
Explain your ITE, polytechnic, WSQ or university award
Submit the actual qualification title, institution, transcript and supporting course information. Nitec and Higher Nitec are not interchangeable; neither should a WSQ Statement of Attainment be described as a university degree.
Use your certificates’ original issuer and award names. Employers and assessing bodies may need details of practical training, apprenticeships and subsequent work. For the Singapore award framework, see ITE and WSQ information.
English evidence and possible exemptions
Check the current subclass 482 English requirements, accepted tests and test dates. Singapore citizenship or having worked in an English-speaking workplace does not automatically exempt you.
A documented exemption may be available, including where the specified full-time secondary or higher study in English meets the official conditions. Evidence of the period, level and language of instruction matters. Do not transfer an exemption from one visa to another; employers and registration bodies may set additional requirements.
Salary, employment conditions and sponsor costs
The nominated pay must satisfy the applicable salary requirements. Confirm the AUD amount, whether it is hourly or annual, guaranteed hours, overtime, allowances and whether superannuation is additional.
Read the employer’s sponsorship obligations and worker rights information. Your rights are not limited to what a recruiter says informally.
Police certificates, health checks and insurance
Follow Home Affairs’ instructions on health checks and character documents. Singapore’s Certificate of Clearance process requires an eligible purpose and supporting authority request; do not assume you should obtain it before it is needed.
Documents from other countries may be required according to your history. Check character requirements and maintain the required health insurance for your stay.
Application steps from Singapore
- Find a suitable role accepting applicants in your position.
- Send a tailored English CV and relevant evidence.
- Complete interviews and confirm written employment terms.
- The employer completes the required sponsorship and nomination steps.
- Prepare your skills, English, health, character and identity evidence.
- Apply through the official process and pay the applicable charges.
- After approval, read your visa conditions and agree travel and starting dates.
Budget and processing time
Check the current visa charges and official processing time information. Employer procedures, skills assessment and document preparation add their own time.
Budget separately for tests, translations, medical checks, insurance, flights, rental deposits and initial living costs. An SGD conversion is only a planning estimate; keep the original AUD amounts and allow for exchange-rate changes.
Planning with a partner or children
Check the family eligibility requirements for each proposed dependant. Gather relationship evidence and any necessary translations, and plan insurance, schooling and initial accommodation.
Work and study rights depend on each person’s granted visa conditions. Do not assume every family member receives identical rights.
Permanent residence is a separate application
A temporary 482 visa does not guarantee permanent residence. The Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186) and Temporary Residence Transition stream have their own nomination and personal requirements.
Employment for a particular period does not automatically produce a permanent visa. Check the current rules and get authorised individual advice where needed.
Documents to prepare in Singapore
Build a clear record of your training and work before applying. Use the same name as your passport, explain any changes of name and keep original documents alongside any required translations.
- Passport and residence: check passport validity and the citizenship recorded in it. Living in Singapore, holding permanent residence and holding a Singapore passport are different things for visa eligibility.
- Qualifications: gather your actual award and transcript, whether issued by ITE, a polytechnic, a university or another institution. Keep Nitec, Higher Nitec, Technical Diploma, Work-Study Diploma and WSQ awards under their exact names. Include course content, practical training and the issuing institution where useful. See the ITE certification system and WSQ course accreditation information.
- Employment: collect references showing dates, hours, duties and equipment used, supported by contracts, payslips, tax records or other independent evidence. CPF records may help where applicable, but are not available for every worker. Obtain referees’ permission before sharing their details. A CV alone is not proof of work experience.
- Police certificates: apply only when the receiving authority requires them. Read the Singapore Police Force’s Certificate of Clearance instructions and the destination’s country-specific requirements. Other countries where you have lived may also need to issue a certificate.
- English: prepare a recognised test or evidence of a specific exemption where required. Singapore residence, citizenship or an English-language CV does not create a general exemption.
- Translations: documents already in English do not need translating simply because they were issued in Singapore. For other documents, follow the receiving authority’s rules on the translator, certification and accompanying original.
Plan your notice period, insurance, initial accommodation and relocation funds. If National Service or exit-permit obligations apply to you, check your individual position with CMPB before planning a long absence. These obligations do not apply identically to every reader.
Home Affairs may require police certificates from more than one country. Check the character requirements and country instructions before requesting documents. Follow the current requirements for translations completed outside Australia, including the translator’s details and qualifications.
Avoid sponsorship and recruitment scams
A job offer or visa approval cannot be bought. Check the employer’s identity, work location, written offer and contact details before sending money or sensitive documents.
- Understand the sponsor’s obligations and challenge requests to pay costs that the employer must bear.
- Separate free applications through this website from official visa charges, tests and any separately agreed professional service.
- Check whether an adviser is authorised through the official migration agent information.
- Never submit invented duties, altered certificates or false employment dates.
Read Home Affairs’ visa scam guidance if someone promises approval or pressures you to pay immediately.
Frequently asked questions
Is subclass 482 a job-seeking visa?
No. It requires the appropriate employer sponsorship and nomination of an eligible role, as well as your personal eligibility.
Will my Singapore trade qualification replace an Australian licence?
Not automatically. Check the relevant skills assessing authority and the occupational regulator for the state or territory where you will work.
Am I exempt from English testing because I am Singaporean?
Citizenship alone is not a blanket exemption. Check whether you meet a specific documented exemption or need an accepted test.
Does every listing guarantee sponsorship?
No. Read the sponsorship and work-right conditions in the advert and confirm the employer’s position. Government approval remains separate.
Can I bring my family?
Check whether each person can be included and the conditions of the visa they receive. Plan relationship evidence, health cover and schooling.
Does a 482 visa guarantee permanent residence?
No. A permanent visa requires a separate eligible pathway and approval.
