Could your Singapore work record support a New Zealand residence plan?
Visa guide · 2026-08-26 · 4 min read

Your Singapore work history may help support a New Zealand residence application, but its relevance depends on the occupation, qualification and New Zealand employment conditions of the chosen pathway. The reforms associated with 24 August 2026 expanded the Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) beyond its traditional points route. This archive guide explains those settings through the evidence an applicant in Singapore would need to organise.
Start with the work you can substantiate
Build an employment timeline using contracts, payslips and referee statements that describe actual duties. Separate overseas experience from time worked in New Zealand, and distinguish work completed before and after qualifying. A managerial title alone cannot establish that the underlying work is skilled. The reforms sought both to recognise practical experience and to address inflated titles and occupational misuse.
Keep the exact name and issuing body on your ITE, polytechnic, WSQ or university records. Do not relabel a Singapore award as a New Zealand qualification. The official explanation of qualification evidence helps identify where recognition needs attention. Our archive guide to New Zealand trade careers provides related occupational context.
Match the evidence to the pathway
The changes had been signalled in September 2025 and developed further in March 2026. Their different experience and pay tests mattered more than the announcement headline:
- Skilled Work Experience: ANZSCO levels 1–3, five years of relevant experience overall, including at least two years in New Zealand earning 1.1 times the SMC median wage.
- Trades and Technician: a Level 4+ qualification and four years of experience after qualifying, including 1.5 years in New Zealand at the median wage.
- Traditional SMC for red-listed roles: the archive described exclusion from both additional pathways, with a higher threshold of 1.5 times the median wage or a Level 7+ bachelor's degree. Examples included some accommodation management, general management, and health-and-beauty occupations.
Amber-listed occupations, including some ICT support and food service work, could use Skilled Work Experience under a higher wage test: five years of experience, including two in New Zealand at 1.2 times the median wage instead of 1.1. These lists were subject to regular review. Check the actual classification; do not rename a role to appear eligible.

Check the less visible evidence conditions
The wage approach described in the reforms used the applicable SMC median wage when skilled experience began, rather than a later increased figure. A five-month grace period covered the transition into qualifying skilled work after visa approval. Preserve the relevant employment and pay dates so that this can be assessed.
For Level 8 or 9 qualification points, a supporting bachelor's degree was generally needed. A New Zealand master's claimed for 5 points was the main exception. Claiming 6 points for a New Zealand master's required both a bachelor's degree and 30+ weeks of full-time New Zealand study.
The archive also described English test validity extending to five years for applicants with recognised New Zealand occupational registration, and SMC eligibility for CPA Australia members able to undertake Qualified Statutory Accountant work in New Zealand. Neither point meant a general exemption for everyone educated in Singapore. A planned 2027 measure would allow an Accredited Employer Work Visa extension for migrants needing up to 12 additional months of skilled experience; it was a future measure in this account.
Common mistakes when preparing a residence file
Do not merge all employment into an undated CV paragraph, assume a local diploma has an automatic overseas equivalence, or treat a vacancy as proof of residence eligibility. Use Build AI CV to organise your career history, then retain the underlying records separately. A polished summary cannot replace evidence.
Frequently asked questions
Can experience in Singapore replace the New Zealand work period?
No. Overseas experience and the specified New Zealand period were distinct parts of the archived pathway tests.
Does a Singapore qualification automatically meet the required level?
No. Keep the original award and transcripts, and establish how the receiving authority recognises them.
Does an amber-listed occupation have the ordinary wage test?
No. The archived Skilled Work Experience settings described a higher wage multiple for those roles.
Who can advise on my individual New Zealand position?
Use an appropriately licensed or exempt New Zealand immigration adviser. Australian registered migration-agent status alone does not establish that New Zealand authority.
Key takeaways
Map duties, qualification dates, pay and location of employment before choosing a pathway. Treat these as historical reform details, retain verifiable Singapore records, and confirm the applicable rules before relying on a residence plan.
