Singapore 462 visa: 2,500 places and an Open sign today, but it could change before you lodge

Visa guide · 2026-11-04 · 8 min read

Two excited young Singaporeans lean towards a laptop with wide eyes and open mouths under green and pink lighting.

Singapore appears on the Home Affairs country-cap table for the first Work and Holiday visa (subclass 462) with an annual grant cap of 2,500, and when we rechecked it on 31 October 2026 it displayed Open. That is a dated observation, not a promise: availability can change, and the page says updates can take up to 48 hours to appear. Read the status on the day you plan to lodge, and treat it as one of several checks rather than the whole question.

What the cap table actually tells you

The table lists each partner country with a status and an annual grant cap. For Singapore the first-462 entry shows a cap of 2,500 places. It sits in the ordinary cap group, not among the countries where a ballot decides who may apply, so there is no Singapore pre-application ballot to enter.

The statuses are not interchangeable. A paused cap is temporary and can reopen, while a closed one is a different situation. An old screenshot, a forum comment or a friend's experience last month cannot tell you which one applies today.

What the table showsWhat it does not show
Singapore is listed for the first 462, with an annual cap of 2,500That a place is reserved for you
The status on the date the page was read, such as OpenThat the status will still be Open when you lodge
Singapore is not in the ballot groupThat you meet the age, education or passport conditions
A warning that updates can take up to 48 hoursThat a grant will follow, or how long a decision takes

Who the Singapore entry is written for

The route is for Singapore citizens holding a valid Singapore passport, aged 18–30, who meet the other requirements. Living in Singapore as a permanent resident or work-pass holder does not carry the same entry. If you hold another passport, the table row for that passport applies instead, so look it up rather than assuming Singapore's cap covers you.

Singapore is also explicitly listed among passports that do not need a government letter of support for a first 462. That exemption belongs to the Singapore passport; it does not move across to a different passport because its holder lives here, and it does not remove the education or English conditions.

Education still decides whether an open cap helps you

An Open status is no use if your study record does not fit. Singapore sits in the education group that needs a tertiary qualification from a university, college or training centre, or 2 completed years of undergraduate university study. Degrees, graduate certificates and diplomas are listed; Certificates I–IV and a senior secondary certificate are not.

So write down what you completed, with the exact award title as printed. A short course or a single module should not be described as a diploma. We go through ITE, polytechnic and university records in more detail in our guide to whether your Singapore study record fits the 462.

A holiday visa is not an employer-sponsored job

The 462 is a holiday route that allows temporary work. As set out for this subclass, you can stay for 12 months, study for up to 4 months and usually work with the same employer for 6 months. English is also assessed: applicants need at least functional English, and if you use an English test it must have been taken within 12 months before applying.

A sponsored position is a separate path. The Skills in Demand visa (subclass 482) requires employer sponsorship and nomination for an eligible position, and it has its own English rules. Our Skills in Demand 482 guide for applicants in Singapore covers that route, and the article on moving from a 462 towards a 482 explains what work evidence may help. If farm or regional work is part of your plan, it also helps to know that 3 months of specified work can make a holder eligible to apply for a second Work and Holiday visa; Seasonal Jobs Australia is a place to look at what seasonal roles involve.

Keep a dated note of what you saw

Because the status can change, record what the table showed and when. A line in your application file with the date, the status and the cap figure is enough. If a later check shows Paused, you can see what changed and whether your plans should move with it.

The same habit helps with the other documents. Keep the date you read each official page next to the evidence you collected for it, so a gap between reading and lodging is easy to spot and repeat.

How to check your position before you lodge

  1. Confirm your passport and age on the official first Work and Holiday page: Singapore citizen, valid Singapore passport, 18–30.
  2. Match your study record to the education group, using the exact award title and transcript.
  3. Choose your English evidence, and note that a test result must be from the last 12 months.
  4. Open the country-cap table on the day you intend to apply and read Singapore's status, allowing for the 48-hour delay it mentions.
  5. Price the trip in AUD and decide what you would do if the status is Paused; our budget guide for the first weeks in Australia helps you test that.
  6. Only then book flights or non-refundable accommodation.

Common mistakes Singapore applicants make with the cap

  • Booking first, checking later. Paying for flights before reading the day's status leaves you exposed if the cap is paused.
  • Treating Open as eligibility. The status says nothing about your age, passport or study record.
  • Assuming a ballot. Ballot rules apply to some other countries, not to Singapore on the table we checked.
  • Using residence instead of citizenship. PR status or an employment pass does not replace a Singapore passport for this entry.
  • Copying another country's route. Arrangements for other passports are not Singapore's; ours is the 462. Compare Australia with New Zealand in our route comparison for Singapore applicants, because New Zealand's Singapore Work Exchange Programme has its own conditions.

When you are ready to look at what employers are advertising, browse hospitality jobs in Australia and New Zealand for the kind of duties listed. A listing is research, not a statement that a holiday visa suits the role. If you also want a polished CV for those roles, Build AI CV can help you draft one, and you should still check every date against your records. Frequently asked questions

Is the Singapore 462 cap open right now?

When rechecked on 31 October 2026 the country-cap table displayed Open for Singapore, with an annual cap of 2,500. That was a single observation, so read the table again on the day you apply.

Does Singapore need a ballot for the Work and Holiday visa?

Singapore is not shown as a ballot country on the cap table we checked. Ballot rules apply to other partner countries, so do not carry those conditions over to a Singapore passport.

Can a permanent resident in Singapore apply under Singapore's entry?

The entry is for Singapore citizens holding a valid Singapore passport. Residence in Singapore does not transfer it, so a person on another passport should check the row for that passport.

Do I need a letter of support from the government?

Singapore is listed among the passports that do not need a government letter of support for a first 462. The education, English and other requirements still apply to you.

Does an Open cap mean I will be granted the visa?

No. Open means applications are being accepted for that country at that time. Whether a grant follows depends on the department's assessment of your application against the requirements.
