Chef salary Australia: compare the offer before leaving Singapore

To assess a chef salary in Australia from Singapore, ask for the duties, pay classification, roster and salary breakdown before comparing the headline amount. Hospitality Award minimums provide a reference where that award applies, while a sponsored Core Skills position has separate salary requirements. Keep the comparison in AUD and distinguish cash wages, superannuation and payments that depend on particular shifts.

Begin with the kitchen responsibilities you would accept

A useful salary discussion starts with the work. Ask which section you would run, who supervises you, whether you train colleagues and what responsibility you carry for preparation, service and quality control. Record these alongside the position title so an impressive label does not obscure a different job.

For applicants working in Singapore, describe the kitchen rather than assuming an Australian employer understands your current title. Explain whether your experience involves restaurant service, banquet preparation or another setting, and distinguish tasks you perform independently from those you assist with. Use actual duties, without enlarging your responsibilities to match an advertisement.

Our guide to demonstrating trade experience when considering Australia develops this evidence-first approach. For a chef, it helps turn a salary conversation into a discussion of the work the employer needs done.

Use the award table after confirming coverage

Most Australian employees have minimum wages set by an award covering their industry or occupation. Ask the employer to identify the applicable award or agreement and explain the classification attached to the proposed duties. Do not assume every business employing a chef uses the same award.

The following figures are the published minimum weekly and hourly rates in the Hospitality Industry (General) Award 2020, with amendments up to 1 July 2026. They are classification references, not a prediction of your offer or take-home earnings.

Hospitality Award classificationWeekly minimum, AUDHourly minimum, AUD
Cook grade 1, Level 21,029.1027.08
Cook grade 2, Level 31,062.9027.97
Cook (tradesperson) grade 3, commis chef, Level 41,119.1029.45
Cook (tradesperson) grade 4, demi chef, Level 51,189.4031.30
Cook (tradesperson) grade 5, chef de partie, Level 61,221.1032.13

Fair Work says most annual minimum wage changes begin with the first full pay period on or after 1 July. When checking a payroll figure, establish the applicable rate date as well as the classification. An old pay table and a current offer can otherwise appear consistent when they need further checking.

Use the Sydney chef de partie and sous chef listing to examine the advertised responsibilities and terms. A listing title is a starting point for questions; it does not establish that every reader has the same classification or sponsorship arrangement.

Read the roster alongside the annual figure

Under the National Employment Standards, the weekly maximum is 38 hours unless an employer requests reasonable additional hours. Ask for the ordinary hours, expected service pattern, breaks and arrangements for extra work. A salary amount alone leaves too much uncertainty about the time commitment.

Ask specifically how weekend, public holiday and late shifts are handled under the applicable award or agreement. Request the relevant penalty and overtime provisions and an explanation of how they are reflected in the proposed pay. Do not insert a generic percentage or assume an annual salary resolves every roster question.

Employment type also changes the comparison. Full-time and part-time employees receive 4 weeks of paid annual leave each year; casual employees do not receive paid annual leave. For a casual offer, ask for the applicable loading and shift rates in writing instead of applying an award-free loading to a covered kitchen role.

Keep your comparison sheet factual: employment type, agreed ordinary hours, additional-hours treatment and leave. If an employer has not supplied an answer, mark it as unresolved. An unanswered question should not become an assumed benefit in your relocation budget.

Ask what the quoted package actually contains

The general superannuation guarantee rate is 12.00% for 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027. The ATO superannuation guarantee table gives the applicable period. Ask the employer to separate the cash salary and employer superannuation contribution, including whether the advertised package includes that contribution.

Do not add superannuation again to a total that already includes it. Equally, do not treat a package figure as the cash amount available for rent, food or commitments in Singapore. Request a written breakdown rather than trying to resolve ambiguous wording through mental arithmetic.

Leave any take-home estimate open until your own tax circumstances have been established. This guide does not convert earnings into SGD or forecast deductions. You can still make progress by documenting the gross AUD offer accurately and recording the personal costs you need to investigate before accepting it.

A sponsored salary needs a separate assessment

For the subclass 482 Core Skills stream, the nominated occupation must be on the Core Skills Occupation List. Pay must meet the Annual Market Salary Rate for the occupation and be no lower than the Core Skills Income Threshold. Meeting a workplace minimum does not settle these nomination conditions.

The threshold is AUD79,423 for nomination applications lodged from 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027. Check the Home Affairs salary requirements against the employer's proposed nomination. Ask how it established the market rate and which salary components it is relying on; a package total is not sufficient explanation.

Our Skills in Demand visa guide provides broader route context. Keep the employer's hiring decision, nomination and your personal visa requirements distinct. None is established simply because you accept the offered salary.

Likewise, national workforce and migration figures cannot tell you what a particular kitchen will offer. Use them as context while basing the decision on the actual position and its documented conditions.

Make your Singapore training and service history readable

List your exact ITE award, polytechnic diploma or other qualification, preserving the institution and award name. ITE distinguishes Nitec, Higher Nitec, Technical Diploma and Work-Study Diploma. None should be renamed as an Australian trade qualification merely to make a CV look familiar.

A WSQ Statement of Attainment certifies a single module. Describe the module you completed and preserve the issuer printed on that document, including on older records. Presenting separate module achievements as a full qualification can give the employer a misleading impression of your training.

Pair training records with a clear employment history: dates, positions, kitchen duties and referees who can confirm the work. Retain relevant payslips and testimonials rather than relying only on an attractive CV. Build AI CV can help organise that information; review every description against your records before using it.

Where a skills assessment is required, Trades Recognition Australia's programme selection depends on occupation, passport country, where you studied and the visa sought. Singapore residence or an ITE or WSQ credential alone does not select the programme. A skills assessment, qualification, occupational registration and visa are separate matters.

English evidence needs similar care. The subclass 482 English requirements include an exemption for at least 5 years of full-time secondary-or-higher study where most classes were taught in English. Keep documentary evidence if relying on that provision; Singapore citizenship, residence and everyday fluency are not interchangeable with satisfying it.

Work through the offer before giving notice

  1. Save the advertisement and request the complete written offer. Compare its responsibilities with your experience and identify any terms that remain conditional.
  2. Ask the employer to confirm coverage, classification, employment type and roster. Record the explanation beside the proposed cash pay, rather than comparing titles alone.
  3. Obtain the treatment of overtime, penalty rates and superannuation in writing. Resolve unclear package wording before treating the offer as a usable budget.
  4. If sponsorship is proposed, clarify the nominated occupation, market-rate assessment and threshold compliance, then check your individual evidence requirements.
  5. Reconcile qualifications and employment dates across your CV, certificates and testimonials. Keep departure decisions separate from an employer's preliminary interest.

You can compare responsibilities across overseas job listings while questions are being resolved. Read our discussion of migration proposals versus operative visa rules if a headline is influencing your timing. A political proposal should not replace checks on the route actually being considered.

Common mistakes when reviewing a kitchen offer from Singapore

  • Matching only job titles. Compare actual duties and the employer's classification explanation, including supervisory responsibilities.
  • Combining unlike amounts. Keep gross cash salary, superannuation and shift-dependent payments distinct; do not compare a package with take-home pay.
  • Transferring a casual percentage. Request the rate applicable to the actual award and employment arrangement.
  • Inflating a training record. A WSQ module or Singapore award should retain its correct description without an invented Australian equivalence.
  • Reading sponsorship into an acceptable wage. Workplace pay obligations and immigration salary conditions require separate checks.

Frequently asked questions

Which Australian pay figure should I compare with a Singapore kitchen offer?

Start with gross cash pay in AUD for clearly stated hours and employment terms. Keep employer superannuation separate, and ask how overtime and penalty rates are treated. A package total without that breakdown is not a sound basis for comparing offers or estimating money available for living costs.

Does a WSQ certificate determine my Australian chef grade?

No. Present the precise award, issuer and training completed, alongside evidence of your kitchen responsibilities. A WSQ Statement of Attainment certifies a single module; it does not establish an Australian award classification, occupational licence or visa entitlement.

Can Hospitality Award minimum pay establish Core Skills sponsorship eligibility?

No. Core Skills sponsorship requires the applicable occupation, Annual Market Salary Rate and income-threshold conditions to be met separately. Ask the employer to explain its nomination salary rather than treating an award-compliant hourly figure as confirmation that the visa requirements are satisfied.

Does English-medium education in Singapore remove the need for a visa English test?

It can be relevant to a specific subclass 482 exemption, but the evidence must meet its conditions. The study-based exemption requires at least 5 years of full-time secondary-or-higher education with most classes taught in English. Living in Singapore or speaking English at work does not by itself establish that exemption.

What should I keep when I start work in an Australian kitchen?

Retain the agreed offer, roster records, records of hours actually worked and each pay slip. Australian pay slips must be provided within 1 working day of pay day. Compare them with the written pay arrangements and ask about unexplained differences while the relevant shifts are still easy to identify.

Key takeaways

  • Request duties, classification and roster before judging the headline salary.
  • Use applicable award minimums as a reference, keeping the comparison in AUD.
  • Separate cash pay, superannuation and shift payments in the written offer.
  • Check Core Skills salary conditions independently of award compliance.
  • Present exact Singapore qualifications and evidence of your kitchen work.
