An Australian degree and then what? A career reality check from Singapore

An Australian qualification does not by itself secure work at the level of that qualification. For a student planning from Singapore, the useful question is how study will connect to a particular occupation. Historical Australian graduate research found substantial underemployment, including among people who remained in the country. Plan for the transition into work as carefully as the admission application.

Include healthcare in your study-to-work planning: our guide to Medicare eligibility when moving from Singapore explains which Australian status to check and how to keep insurance and visa medical examinations separate.

Begin with the destination job

Before choosing a course, examine the work you hope to do. Compare the responsibilities and evidence sought in overseas job listings with your existing experience and the course content. Ask a prospective provider how practical learning relates to that work. The official Study Australia website offers a starting point for exploring study options.

If your intended work involves driving between sites or visiting clients, include licensing in that career plan. Our Singapore licence conversion guide for Australian work explains state recognition, WA Singpass verification and the separate heavy-vehicle testing question.

If your background includes a Singapore polytechnic diploma, an ITE award or university study, describe the actual qualification and retain its transcripts. Explain relevant projects and workplace tasks rather than assuming an overseas reader knows the award. A Singapore certificate or employer testimonial does not automatically establish Australian occupational recognition.

When preparing for a trade interview, use our guide to explaining Singapore trade experience to an Australian employer to connect qualification records with specific work examples and describe assessment and licensing progress accurately.

For electrical workers considering New Zealand as another destination, our guide to preparing Singapore evidence for EWRB registration explains how award records and certified work references support an application, and why supervised practice and immigration checks require separate attention.

If your qualification and work experience are also leading you to consider New Zealand, use these AEWV offer and evidence checks for applicants in Singapore to identify what the employer, qualification assessor and immigration authority each need to establish.

For nurses, our guide to preparing Singapore nursing evidence for Australian registration explains how to organise education, registration and practice records while keeping professional recognition separate from hiring and visa decisions.

Read the results through the study's time window

The International Students Pathways and Outcomes Study, released by Jobs and Skills Australia in September 2025, tracked students who commenced in 2010–11 through to the end of 2023. Its policy coverage also ended in 2023, before the subsequent Migration Strategy changes. These historical outcomes cannot measure the effects of those later reforms or forecast an individual's prospects.

About 35 to 40 per cent of international students beginning in the early 2010s obtained permanent residency within 10 years. For identifiable higher education and vocational graduates in linked employment and tax records, more than half became permanent residents within a decade. These are different groups, so the higher result should not be presented as the outcome for all students.

Residence, job level and field of work tell different stories

Career questionHistorical finding
Did qualifications match the level of work?More than half of international graduates qualified for the highest occupational skill level were employed below that level. The domestic comparison was about 20 to 30 per cent below qualification level.
Did graduates work in their study field?International graduates who remained were less likely to do so, particularly higher education graduates compared with vocational education and training (VET) graduates.
Were earnings comparable?International graduates earned less on average than domestic graduates holding equivalent qualifications.

These findings describe patterns, not a ranking of courses for every applicant. They do not establish a personal salary forecast or show that choosing VET will secure a relevant job.

Turn the barriers into preparation questions

The research identified English proficiency, limited practical Australian experience, difficulty obtaining recognition for overseas experience and employer uncertainty about temporary visas. It also identified recruitment bias and perceptions that international graduates were less prepared for work. Better preparation can address some concerns, but applicants cannot individually remove unfair hiring practices.

To turn the English question into a document checklist, read our guide to Singapore study evidence and English tests for overseas work visas. It separates a possible Australian study-based exemption from employer communication and New Zealand visa evidence.

  • Can you explain a project, your contribution and its outcome clearly in an interview?
  • Can placements or relevant work help you demonstrate practical capability within your permitted conditions?
  • Can a referee substantiate your responsibilities and dates of employment in Singapore?
  • Can you explain your actual visa conditions accurately without implying permanent work rights?

Keep the policy debate in its historical setting

International education contributed more than $50 billion to Australia's economy in 2023–24. The research highlighted the workforce contribution graduates could make, while identifying poor transitions into skilled jobs as a constraint. Political debate included calls for sharp intake reductions and a government defence of retaining some graduates in needed occupations, such as doctors and nurses working in hospitals. The government said most students returned home and acknowledged exploitation by some poor-quality providers.

At the time of the article, the government's national planning level was 295,000 student commencements for 2026, with an intention to retain that level in 2027. Education Department figures put commencements 8 per cent below the comparable period in 2025 and 13 per cent below 2019. Those figures describe intake, rather than graduate employment success.

Common mistakes in study-to-career planning

Avoid treating permanent residency as proof of skilled employment, a historical average as a personal prediction, or fluent everyday English as evidence for every formal requirement. If family accompaniment affects your decision, our archive article on student family arrangements under proposed reforms explains another planning issue; verify applicable rules separately.

Frequently asked questions

Does this study assess the later Migration Strategy?

No. Its policy and outcome window ended in 2023.

Did permanent residents always obtain skilled work?

No. Remaining in Australia and securing work matching a qualification were separate outcomes.

If you are weighing destinations as well as qualifications, compare Australian and New Zealand work routes using your Singapore education and employment records before making a relocation plan.

Nurses comparing New Zealand with an Australian career plan also need to distinguish study from professional recognition. Our guide to New Zealand nursing registration from Singapore explains how education, registration and practice history inform the Council assessment before employment and immigration decisions.

If your next step involves recognition of earlier Singapore training, use our guide to preparing Singapore qualifications and work evidence for an Australian skills assessment to distinguish award records, assessment requirements and occupational licensing.

Does the VET comparison make it the best choice for everyone?

No. Evaluate the occupation, course content and your background rather than treating a group comparison as a recommendation.

If you are considering culinary training, compare the work and remuneration you hope to pursue using our Australian chef offer checklist for applicants in Singapore, which separates award classification, roster commitments and sponsored salary requirements.

What should a Singapore-based applicant prepare first?

Identify the intended work, then gather study records, relevant practical examples and referee evidence that explain your readiness.

Key takeaways

Choose study with a credible employment plan. Preserve the distinction between admission, residency and skilled work, and use the historical findings to ask better questions rather than predict an assured outcome.
